Handmade in India
Handmade by master quilt makers in Gujarat, our luxurious Chindi Quilts are meticulously crafted from carefully placed patchwork panels hand embroidered with tiny rows of traditional kantha stitches. Each quilt has a unique placement of patchwork and the raw edges of the fabrics are left exposed on the upper face of the quilt to create an imperfect, “wabi-sabi” look, inspired by Japanese boro fabrics. With a plain ecru cotton reverse for extra comfort, the quilts are soft washed to give a wonderfully gentle, tactile finish.
Handwoven from unbleached, organic, rain-fed kala cotton, these beautiful quilts are ethically produced by self-employed workers. The kala fabrics are purchased through the Kala Cotton Initiative which encourages sustainable cotton textile production and the preservation of agricultural and artisan livelihoods in the arid Kutch (or Kachchh) region. Kala cotton is a genetically pure, drought resistant, Old World cotton indigenous to Kachchh. Free from pesticides and synthetic fertilisers, the crop is fed solely by rainwater, minimising the environmental impact of production.
